Ingredients in blueberry compote oatmeal
Here are the two ingredients in the oatmeal base. Yup! Just two simple ingredients to make the creamy oatmeal base.
- We will use whole rolled oats for the oatmeal. You can definitely use any oatmeal you like. Just please note that different types of oatmeal require more (or less) liquid and varying amounts of cooking time.
- Next, any milk of your choice. We will use milk to cook the oats which creates super creamy oatmeal. For this recipe, you can use cows milk, almond milk, or any dairy free milk of your choice.
Fresh blueberry compote recipe
Here are the five ingredients in the blueberry compote.
- Blueberries, of course! We will use two cups of fresh blueberries.
- Next, pure maple syrup. Pure maple syrup adds an all natural sweetness and helps create the compote texture.
- Chia seeds also help with texture! When cooked and added in with the blueberries and maple syrup they create a gel-like texture.
- Just a splash of lemon juice.
- And a pinch of salt to enhance all the flavors.
How to make
STEP 1
Firstly, make the blueberry compote. Grab a large pan and add all the compote ingredients: blueberries, maple syrup, chia seeds, lemon juice and salt.
STEP 2
Let the compote simmer for twenty minutes, stirring frequently. It will thicken over 15-20 minutes. And that’s it!
STEP 3
Meanwhile, after about ten minutes of cooking the compote, make the oatmeal base. Grab a small saucepan and add the oats and milk.
STEP 4
Mix the oatmeal ingredients together with a spatula over medium-low heat for 4-5 minutes. Stir consistently. Please note, that if you use whole oats it may take a little bit longer. Pour the oatmeal into a bowl and add a spoonful of blueberry compote.
ENJOY! Top with other fresh berries, almonds, walnuts, cashews and peanut butter.
Toppings for oatmeal
Toppings on oatmeal is an absolute must. They are a total game changer. Plus, they make oatmeal so versatile and you can really add anything you like. Here are some popular toppings:
Fresh banana. Banana paired with oatmeal is always a good choice. Banana adds a slightly sweet and nutritious topping loaded with potassium.
More blueberries! Along with the blueberry compote, add fresh or frozen blueberries! I actually prefer frozen wild blueberries rather than fresh blueberries so definitely give frozen berries a try. They soften and ‘melt’ over the hot oatmeal creating a little blueberry juice.
Natural peanut butter. Peanut butter + blueberry compote is a MUST. It’s like a peanut butter and jelly on oatmeal but even better. For this recipe you can use creamy or chunky peanut butter. Also, make sure to use an all natural peanut butter as it won’t have any added preservatives or chemicals. You can usually find good natural peanut butters at your local grocery store.
Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds add a nice crunch. They also add a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. Here are a few popular nut additions: walnuts, almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds.
Last but not least, chopped dates! Another crowd favorite topping as they add an all natural sweetness. Pit and finely chop the dates and sprinkle them on top of the warm oatmeal.
