Ingredients you’ll need for almond flour chocolate cake
You will need the below ingredients to whip up this cake!
- We will be using almond flour as the main flour, hence the recipe name lol.
- Cocoa powder adds a very rich chocolate flavor.
- Baking powder and baking soda both help puff up this cake and give it structure.
- A pinch of salt helps enhance the flavors.
- Eggs help add structure to this cake and they also help bind everything together.
- Coconut sugar is the main sugar in this recipe. Feel free to use regular granulated sugar if you prefer.
- Melted butter is the baking fat in this recipe. You can also substitute a light oil if you prefer.
- Vanilla extract enhances all the flavors.
Baking with almond flour
This recipe uses almond flour as the main flour. Almond flour is a very versatile paleo and gluten free flour. For starters, you must know that it is only made with one ingredient: ground almonds! Which is one of the many reasons I love baking with it. Almonds contain a lot of healthy fats, fiber, and protein, just to name a few benefits.
Sometimes baking with almond flour can be a tad tricky as it doesn’t have the same binding qualities as traditional flour. There is definitely some trial and error when it comes to baking with paleo flours (sometimes there are more errors than I would like – but hey, thats how you learn, right?).
I must say, this healthier cake recipe has the perfect balance of almond flour, cocoa powder, eggs and wet ingredients to make it perfectly moist and fluffy. Even Peter loved it and that is how I knew it was a winner!

Frequently asked questions
Can I use another type of flour?
No. I do not recommend substituting any other flour. Other flours types do not have the same qualities or weight so they will not work well in this specific recipe.
Can I make this cake ahead of time?
Yes! If you want to make this cake a day ahead simply bake the cake according to the instructions. Let the cake cool and wrap it in plastic wrap tightly. Store it in the fridge for up to a day. Then remove it from the fridge, add the frosting, and enjoy!
Can I freeze this cake?
Yes! I recommend cutting individual slices and freezing them separately. Wrap each piece carefully in a layer of plastic wrap and then a layer of foil and store them in the freezer for up to a month.
Tip for making the best chocolate cake
- I recommend using finely ground blanched almond flour as it will result in a nicely textured cake. Using grainy almond flour can mess with the texture integrity of this cake. I love buying this kind on Amazon because it is very finely ground.
- Bring the eggs to room temperature. You can soak the eggs in a bowl of warm water while you gather your other ingredients. Room temperature eggs blend nicely into the batter along with the melted butter and sugar.
- Use 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Yup 1 whole tablespoon. It really helps enhance all the flavors in this cake!
