Substitutes for oat flour cinnamon rolls

Below you’ll find some substitutes and variations for this oat flour recipe.

Flour. For this recipe I do not recommend substituting the oat flour for any other flour.

Sugar. Feel free to use brown sugar or white sugar instead of coconut sugar.

Milk. While this recipe calls for almond milk you can also use cows milk, oat flour or any other dairy free milk of choice.

Butter. This recipe calls for melted butter but feel free to use melted coconut oil or melted vegan butter instead.

Baking with oat flour

Baking with oat flour is very simple! It is essentially the same as baking with regular flour except oat flour has a different texture and wait. Oat flour is a nutritious whole grain flour. It makes very fluffy and nicely textured baked goods so, always find myself reaching for it frequently! Oat flour is loaded with complex carbs, fiber and whole grains. It is a healthier alternative to regular flour.

Not only is it nutritious, but it’s also gluten free. So it is great for someone who has a gluten intolerance.

How to make this oat flour dessert

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 inch circle pan with cooking spray.

Combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl: oat flour, coconut sugar, baking powder and salt. Mix and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: the almond milk, butter, and vanilla. Make sure the almond milk is at room temperature (or you can microwave it for 20 seconds) before adding in the butter. This will prevent the butter from solidifying. Whisk until fully combined.

Fold in the dry flour ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix just until combined and the dough forms into a ball. Let the dough sit for a minute or two to thicken.

Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Using your hands or a rolling pin, press the dough and shape it into a rectangle, about 12×8 inches or 1/4 inch thick.

Prepare your filling by combining the coconut sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

Brush the flattened dough with melted butter or coconut oil. Sprinkle the filling on top in an even layer.

Roll the dough into a log form. Slowly roll the dough from the short side. It’s ok if the dough starts to crack. Carefully pinch the dough together with your hands to keep it from cracking. Continue this process until fully rolled up.

Cut the dough into 9 rolls. Place the rolls in the prepared circle pan. Top each roll with a small sliver of butter and bake for 25 minutes.

Make your icing. Combine all the icing ingredients in a small bowl until fully combined. If the icing is too dry, add in another tablespoon of almond milk.

Top each cinnamon roll with icing and enjoy!
