Ingredients needed for chocolate peanut butter balls
You will need the below ingredients to make this peanut butter balls recipe!
- Creamy peanut butter is the main ingredient, duh! Make sure to use a natural creamy peanut butter with no added chemicals or preservatives.
- Oat flour and coconut flour both help bring the ingredients together. You can likely find oat flour and coconut flour at your local grocery store. If not, definitely try ordering them online. Stores like Amazon and target typically have them available! Also, you can make your own our flour by blending oats in a high speed blender. You’ll want to blend the oats until they form into a smooth and fine flour.
- Maple syrup helps add a little sweetness. Make sure to use a pure maple syrup and not pancake syrup. You can also try adding honey instead.
- Chocolate chips and coconut oil are melted to create the chocolate coating. If you don’t have coconut oil you can use a little bit of butter instead.
What makes these chocolate peanut butter balls healthier?
For this recipe I use natural creamy peanut butter. Make sure you give it a good stir because it tends to be very oily! Natural peanut butter has no added chemicals or preservatives.
Oat flour is made with just one ingredient: ground oats! Oats are a great source of whole grains, fiber and carbohydrates. You can also find oat flour that is gluten free if you are sensitive to gluten or grains.
Coconut flour is a great gluten free flour that is rich in fiber!
Lastly, maple syrup is a non processed, all natural sweetener. I love adding it into my baked goods because it adds texture, moisture and sweetness. As mentioned, you can also use honey instead if you don’t have maple syrup on hand.
How to make these peanut butter balls
The below five steps outline how to make these peanut butter balls.
STEP 1
Combine the ingredients. In a medium bowl add the the creamy peanut butter, oat flour, coconut flour and maple syrup. Mix until fully combined.
STEP 2
Roll into balls. Using a cookie scoop or a spoon, scoop and roll 15 peanut butter balls. Place them on a cookie sheet and set them in the fridge while you melt the chocolate.
STEP 3
Dip in chocolate. In a small bowl, melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave. Microwave in 15 second increments, stirring each time, until fully melted. Dip each ball in chocolate. I like using a fork! (Tips on how to do this are down below)
STEP 4
Sprinkle with sea salt. This step is optional but I highly recommend it! The combination of chocolate and sea salt is my favorite.
STEP 5
Set peanut butter bites in the fridge. To allow the chocolate to harden, set the peanut butter bites in the fridge anywhere from 15-45 minutes.
How to dip peanut butter balls in chocolate
Dipping any treat into melted chocolate can sometimes be a tricky (and messy!) task. I have included some of my tips and tricks below to hopefully make this process a little easier for you.
- Use two forks! Dip each peanut butter ball in the melted chocolate. Use a fork to dip and cover the peanut butter bites in chocolate. Use another fork to help place them on the cookie sheet. Using a fork allows the excess chocolate to drip off. If you use a spoon it tends to clump up and you’ll use more chocolate than needed.
- Microwave in small increments. If the chocolate starts to harden, simply add it back to the microwave for another 10-15 seconds. This will help it melt again.
- Add more coconut oil. Also, if the chocolate mixture becomes too thick, you can add an additional teaspoon on coconut oil. You can also add a teaspoon of milk. Simply add the extra coconut oil or milk to the melted chocolate and microwave for another 10-15 seconds and stir to combine.
Possible additions to these peanut butter balls
- Double dip in chocolate! This tip is for all my chocolate lovers out there. For an extra thick chocolate layer, dip the peanut butter bites in chocolate two times. Once the first layer of chocolate has hardened, repeat the same process.
- Sprinkle flaked sea salt on top. Adding salt is a total game changer. There is definitely something about salty and sweet that we are love. You’re going to love this flaked sea salt! You should be able to find it in your local grocery store or on Amazon.
