Apple pie oatmeal ingredients
The oatmeal base requires just two main ingredients. The combination of oats and milk creates the best creamy consistency. Since we are spicing things up with this apple oatmeal we are going to add a little cinnamon into the mix. Now keep reading to find all the details!
- For this recipe you can use whole rolled oats or quick oats. You can definitely use either option just know that both options require different cooking times. As you know, quick oats take five minutes or less and whole rolled oats can take a little over five minutes.
- The second ingredient we are working with is milk. Milk cooks the oats and creates super creamy oatmeal (which is exactly what we want)! For this recipe, you can use any milk that you like; cows milk, almond milk, or any dairy free milk of your choice will work.
- Lastly, cinnamon for an extra punch of spice and flavor. This recipe calls for one teaspoon of cinnamon in the oatmeal base but you can add more or less depending on your liking.
Apple pie topping ingredients
Here are the ingredients you’ll need for the apple pie topping. You only need five simple ingredients!
We will use Ghee, butter or coconut oil to sauté the apples. Ghee is a clarified butter and is best to use if you have any diary allergies.
Apples, of course! Use one medium/large apple or two small apples. Make sure you peel and core the apple before slicing and dicing into small pieces.
A dash of cinnamon to enhance all the flavors! Cinnamon is key for this apple pie filling.
Coconut sugar, or brown sugar to sweeten things up. If you don’t have coconut sugar on hand, brown sugar works just as well.
Lastly, maple syrup! Maple syrup is an all natural sweetener. When paired with the coconut sugar it creates the perfect balance of sweetness.
Additional toppings
To add some additional flavor and crunch, give some of these topping variations a try.
Walnuts are a delicious and crunchy nut. They have many nutritional benefits as they are rich in antioxidants and are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids.
Next up, pecans! Pecans are another great addition as they add so much flavor. I find that pecans are definitely enjoyed more around the fall and the holidays. Also, they are a great source of calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
And the last addition, freshly sliced banana! Banana is always a good choice when it comes to oatmeal as it adds an all natural sweetness and just pairs so nicely with creamy oatmeal.
How to make this recipe
Follow these five simple steps to whip up this apple cinnamon oatmeal recipe.
STEP 1
Firstly, make the apple topping. Grab a large pan and add the ghee. Let it it melt and then add all the remaining ingredients.
STEP 2
Let the filling ingredients simmer for ten minutes, stirring frequently. It will thicken over the ten minutes and the apples will be coated with the cinnamon mixture.
STEP 3
Meanwhile, after about five minutes of cooking the apple filling, make the oatmeal base. Grab a small saucepan and add the oats, milk and cinnamon.
STEP 4
Mix the oatmeal ingredients together with a spatula over medium to low heat for 4-5 minutes. If you use whole oats this will take 5-7 minutes to fully cook. If you use quick oats it can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes.
STEP 5
Pour the oatmeal into two bowls and add a few spoonfuls of apple pie filling on top. Add other toppings like: walnuts, pecans, cinnamon, and freshly sliced banana.
How to store
If you have leftover apple pie oatmeal, let it cool. Then you can store these oats in an airtight container in the fridge. I recommend storing the oats and apple topping separately.
To reheat the oats, add them back on the stove with more milk over medium heat. Mix the oatmeal frequently, just until smooth and heated through. You will likely add 1/4-1/2 cup of milk depending on how much was left over and to reach the consistency of your liking.
To reheat the apple pie filling, heat it in the microwave or over medium/low heat on the stove.
